The History of Canongate
At the east end of the Royal Mile, the spine of Edinburgh’s Old Town, sits Holyrood Abbey. The area around the Abbey became a separate and autonomous Burgh, named ‘The Canongate.’ Even though this historic area has long been integrated into the City of Edinburgh, many residents still feel a distinct sense of community to this day.
